- French (?), late XVc, see 1874-6-13-538 for attribution to Jean Poyet. The drawing was attributed to the school of Dürer when acquired by the Museum. Other drawings from the same series appeared in a sale at Sotheby's on 1 July 1966, lot 94.
Literature: Janet Backhouse, British Library Journal, XIII, 2, 1987, pp. 211-231 (attributes to Jean Poyet [offprint and correspondence in BM dossier]); Mara Hofmann, 'Jean Poyer: Das Gesamtwerk', 2004, pp.43-44 and 186, fig.131 (as well as 1874,0613.538, the other drawings in the group, which are all the known drawings by Poyer, are 'Joseph sold into Slavery' [Rotterdam, inv. F I 1], the 'Anointing of David' [private collection, USA] and the 'Mocking of Elijah' [Chicago Art Institute, inv. no.1965.16]; probably intended as modelli for stained glass; 1874,0613.538 is the earliest event in the Bible among the surviving series; suggests a date c.1500).
