Portrait of James Gardiner, half-length, in an oval, slightly turned to the left, with a long curling periwig, dressed in a military frockcoat over a cuirass etched with foliate designs and a double-headed eagle, a plain stock tied tightly about his neck, with the title of the book in elegant lettering with scrolling flourishes surrounding the portrait; frontispiece to a late edition of Doddridge's "The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul"
