- Curator's comments
- The grounds for Bartsch`s identification of the woman as St Margaret are uncertain given that St Margaret`s hagiography is centred on her virginal martyrdom, and the young woman represented lacks a halo and is flimsily dressed, suggesting the print was made with lascivious intent. Dr Jill Burke (email, 15.iii.11) considers the figure to depict a witch, noting the convex mirror, a traditional attribute of witches, and the presence of the demon-like creature.
