Curator's comments
Plate 7 in the first volume of 'The Houghton Gallery', see 2005,U.109. The painting, formerly attributed to da Vinci, is now given to his workshop/school. It has been kept in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, since 1779. For scratched letter proof, dated 1774, see 1885,1212.18.
