The auction
Description
See BMSat 10659. The auctioneer stands at his rightostrum (l.), addressing a grinning Irishman who stands in the foreground by the door (r.) holding an open umbrella, with ferrule resting on the floor. All the potential bidders look at him much amused, as does an auctioneer's clerk who displays a case of knives. Below the design: 'To an Auction an honest Hibernian went And to Knock 'em down's Rhet'rick was very intent, Who of Puffs made a brilliant Display; "May I bid what I plase" the Irishman cried, "To be sure Sir" the Knight of the Hammer replied, "Then I bid you" says Pat ---- "a Good Day."' c.1806 Hand-coloured etching
