- Curator's comments
- In 1519 the tower of the St Stephans cathedral in Vienna was crowned with a crescent moon, which was turning around a eight-pointed star, apparently as symbols for the Pope and Emperor. Eventually the symbols became strongly associated with the Turks, and the population became to believe that the finial had been installed on orders of Sultan Süleyman. In 1683 Emperor Leopold I permitted the deposition of the offending finial, which was replaced in 1686 with a double-arm cross, which was to last only until December 1686, and be replaced with another finial. The crescent moon and star were fixed together, and a satirical inscription was added which shows a hand with a rude gesture, the date 1529, and the lettering "Haec Solymanne Memoria tua."
