A shield quartered by a cross. In the quarterings are (dexter) faggots and a firebrand; below, soldiers firing muskets; (sinister) crossed daggers dripping with blood; below, a sheaf of corn inscribed 'Tithes'. The supporters are the Devil in surplice and lawn sleeves with moneybags, inscribed '£70 0000', &c, tied to his crozier; and, sinister, Folly in cap and bells, with a fool's bauble, biting his thumb. The crest is a wolf's head wearing a mitre set in a coronet, and with a lamb in its mouth. The motto: 'Reverend Very Reverend Right Reverend'; proof before the published state.

The text explains that only the cross is inappropriate, 'the sign of Christianity, but as it is so seldom practised the device comes under the denomination of arms of pretension . . .'. One of many expressions of hatred to the Church, inflamed by the bishops' attitude to Reform, see No. 16805, &c.
