- Curator's comments
- This is from 'Oeuvres choisies de J. J. Rousseau' published in fifteen in-8° volumes, London, c.1783.
The twenty-seven plates (including a portrait) illustrating this edition were designed by Marillier in 1779-1781 and engraved by Dambrun, Ghendt, Halbou, Ingouf, R. & N. de Launay, Longueil, Macret, Ponce and Trière. An advert in 'Mercure', October 1782, indicates that the set was published by Emslet & Thomas Hookham (London) and Veuve Duchesne (Paris) and cost 15 livres.
The plates were also included in certain copies of Rousseau's 'Oeuvres complètes' published in Paris by Bélin in 1793 (37 vols in-12°).
See Cohen, Guide de l'Amateur de livres à gravures du XVIIIe siècle, 1912, 911-912.
The illustrations are referred to as 'Suite Marillier' in the IFF (18thC, vol.V, p.447).
