- Curator's comments
- This is one of 26 proofs of this plate in the British Museum, presented by the engraver and mostly annotated by him in pencil with the date of production. They are here listed in his date order. The plate was begun in early January 1871 and the first publication line (of the etched state) was added on 19th January 1871. This was never taken off but gradually wore down. Work on the plate continued into 1878 but no new lettering was ever added.
