- Curator's comments
- From a series of twenty-two portraits representing French deputies elected at the Assemblée Nationale of 1789. The portraits were engraved by Fiesinger after Guérin and often printed in brown; for dates of Guérin's drawings see the IFF (IFF 18th century, Fiesinger, cat. No.14-35).
Friedrich Meyer ("Fragmente aus Paris im IV Jahr des französischen Republik", Hamburg, 1797) notes that during the Reign of Terror many printsellers had to destroy their impressions of the set for fear to be arrested and executed; the series is therefore relatively rare.
The series is recorded as "Portraits des députés à l'Assemblée Nationale en 1789", which is the title given in the catalogue of the De Vinck Collection, but it is not the published title.
The IFF states that the drawing by Guérin for this plate was executed in 1790.
