- One out of eight subjects from a series of the Passion (Schr. 2302, 2364, 2376, 2386, 2416, 2424, 2474).
The entire series, known as the Stoeger Passion (including eight subjects, representing the seven joys of Mary), consists of twenty-eight cuts and supposedly was produced in Southern Germany about 1460-70 (cf. Dodgson, Prints in the Dotted Manner and other Metalcuts of the XV Century in the Department of Prints and Drawings, London 1937, Nos. 50-8)
A variety of different impressions and editions exist; only one complete set, which appeared in book form, with German text printed from movable type, is known (in the Staatsbibliothek in Munich). Lambert is of the opinion that the Stoeger Passion may have been the first illustrated typographic book, cf. Gisèle Lambert: "Metalcut", The Dictionary of Art, ed. Jane Turner (London: Macmillan, 1996), XXI, 337-9.
The present cut is another impression of the same plate as 1872,0608.380, also from a book with German text, but from a different edition.
The background pattern resembles that of Schreiber No. 2315 (1872,0608.382).
