A broadside with a satire on the Peace of Utrecht, concluded in March 1713, based, in reverse, a satire on the peace treaty between England and France proclaimed on 18 August 1712 (BM Satires 1580), itself a reworking of a satire by Romeyn de Hooghe on Louis XIV, James II and the infant Old Pretender (BM Satires 1158). The plan for the treaty (1) appears where there was a table in the former version; in the centre sits Peace (2) holding an olive branch and with a scroll in her lap lettered "Juste Protestation des Allies" (the objections of the Emperor and his allies to the separate peace negotated by France and England); Cardinal Polignac (3) stands towards the left; behind him stand the Duke of Ormond and a Tory ally (4), an unnumbered man labelled "Wigh" stands behind Ormond to the left; the figure of Louis XIV has been replaced by the French herald (5) holding a paper lettered, as before, "Bonne Paix De'Anglois Me rend gay"; Maria Luisa of Savoy (6) stands to the right of the herald; Philip V of Spain (7) in front of the pillar; the Emperor (8) now wearing a full-bottomed wig, with an eagle hovering wings outstretched above his head, stands towards the left, the Duke of Marlborough (9) behind him; on the left stands the Pope holding the keys of St Peter (10); a Jesuit (11) stands between Maria Luisa of Savoy and Philip V; the Old Pretender (12) stands in front of Philip V; at right, a confessor (13; Père La Chaise) fondles Madame de Maintenon (14) who, smiling, sits on his lap letting fall the plan for the treaty (1); two choristers (15) stand, singing, to the right of Peace; the Harlequin of France (16) wearing a cap and bells stands further to the right, beside three men described as Free Spirits (17, 18, 19); the man with the telescope observing foreign lands (20) and the messenger with a horn (21) are now both described as Postillions. Engraved title in German, Dutch and French; title in letterpress in German above; three columns of verse with key in German, Dutch. 1713
