- Study for an illustration to a satirical broadside entitled 'Desmoulins and Lucile' , published June 1795 (Alexander 171; P&D 1948-2-14-377). See David Bindman, 'The Shadow of the Guillotine' (BM, P&D Exh., No.151). The drawing was formerly called 'La Bédoyère in Prison'.
Dr Marianne Gilchrist (email June 2020) suggests that Newton may have used a portrait of Robespierre as a source as she recognises his pert, upturned nose which is unlike that of Desmoulins.
