The inscription states that the sitter on the left is a French surgeon who acted as a midwife for the delivery of one [or more] of the queen of Naples’ children. The latter was Maria Amalia of Saxony (1724-1760), wife of Charles VII of Bourbon, King of Naples (1716-1788). In Ghezzi’s lifetime Maria Amalia gave birth to 11 children, the first one in 1740 (two more children after Ghezzi’s death).
