The inscription states that Padre Gioia was the assistant of the Order of the Augustinians. The second part of the inscription, added later, states the date of his death (2 November 1751) and that by then he was General of the same Order. Another caricature of the same sitter, facing left and dated 2 [or 12] November 1748 is at the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburgh (inv. OP-3582)
The sitter is Agostino Gioia (1695-1751).
