- Formerly placed as Anonymous Dutch 17thc, the attribution to Venturini and connection to an altarpiece in the church of Sant'Alessandro, Grassobbio, near Begamo was made by Enrico Ghetti (we are grateful to Giovanni Agosti for bringing this to our attention). The painting (Ghetti fig. 2) differs from the drawing in a number of minor details, such as the position of the crib and the addition of a shepherd beside St Joseph, which Ghetti convincingly argues are proof that it is a preliminary study for the work which bears a later inscription to Domenico Mona and date 1592. The chronology of Venturini's small surviving corpus consisting of less than twenty paintings is yet to be settled but Ghetti suggests that the 1592 date might be accurate for the painting's execution. It is the only known drawing by the Ferrarese artist. Previously Michiele Danieli suggested that the drawing was an early work by Camillo Procaccin.
