- Curator's comments
- It is not clear when or who made the attribution to Salviati as it did not arrive with this name according to the Departmental Register. It was placed as Salviati although Cheney was less than certain that it was by him ('this attribution is not completely certain'); Mortari accepted it without reservation. McTavish's recent suggestion that it is by Pellegrino Tibaldi is much more persuasive as the quality of the penwork and the use of wash is similar to drawings such as 1895-9-15-679. The Perino del Vaga inspiration of the fantastic classical decoration (particularly in the muscular marine deities) also fits more neatly with Tibaldi, as he worked alongside Perino in the decoration of the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome in the 1540s.
