See No. 15983. A sequence of vignettes. 'Becomes an Antiquary'. In a Gothic room, surrounded by bogus or valueless antiques, and wearing a dressing-gown, Pickle gazes at a broken medallion-portrait, displayed by a foppish salesman: 'Now mine goot Senor, me do vish to give you de benefit, You sal have dis fine Antique & you sal give me von little dirty Pounds'.
'Studies Music'. At ease in his dressing-gown by the fire he blows a French horn, his music on a stand. He is unconscious of a man in a night-shirt who stands by the door, candle in hand: 'Mr Pickle Sir this is too bad here have I & my family been in Bed these four hours & cant get a Wink of sleep. Mrs H is quite Nervous, I've got the headache the Children are crying and—You'll excuse me all though [sic] the frightful Noise you'r making you'll pardon me'.
'Aerostation'. Pickle falls from a balloon into the Thames. A rope from the basket is held by a man in a wherry, with a single waterman. On the nearer bank a yokel with a pitchfork awaits the descent of the falling balloon.
'Painting'. Pickle, wearing a dressing-gown, and holding brush and maulstick, flinches from a virago who overturns easel, paints, &c, and, as the canvas falls, dashes her spiked umbrella against a half-length portrait of herself, an excellent likeness. She says: 'You vile Man, getting me to sit before you only to be Caircatured [sic] so provokeingly. I'll teach you to make your Jest of me there Sir, there'.
'Poetry'. Pickle, in dressing-gown and nightcap, sits with his elbows on a writing-desk: 'Azure—Azure what Devil ryhmes [sic] with that but brazier. Azure—Azure, brazier'. Below: "Cudgel thy brains no longer" ['Hamlet', v. i misquoted].
'Chymistry. An Unlucky Experiment'. In his dressing-gown he rushes frantically from the flames spreading from the grate, where a pot has been flung into the air, and a cat with a flaming tail streaks away. He screams 'help, help, fire, fire'. 1 July 1829
