Title-page to Sir John Hayward, 'The Sanctuarie of a Troubled Soul' (London, G. Purslow for R. Dawlman, 1631), corrected and enlarged edition; at the top, the tetragrammaton; top left, personification of faith, holding a cross and a chain attached to a heart in the centre; top right, personification of hope, holding an anchor and another chain attached to the heart; top centre, personification of love, holding an arrow and standing on the heart, into which she pours from a decanter; below left, personification of grief, holding thorns with which she pierces the heart; below right, personification of fear, holding a sword with which she impales the heart; inscriptions identify each personification, and either side of the heart an inscription, 'A Contrite Heart'; bottom centre, portrait in oval of the author, bearded and wearing a ruff; bottom left a scene in a plinth with the inscription 'Flie from Evel'; bottom right, a scene depicting an act of charity with the inscription 'Doe good'.
