- The first of a series of six plates (1869,0612.552 and 301-305; 1977,U.1232-7). To judge by the lettering and the fact that the artist's name is scratched out or cancelled in the impressions published by Lloyd, Smith's edition is the first.
Despite Hollstein's numbering, the logic of the verses would give the following order for the plates: titlepage; the son rides; the father rides; they both ride; they carry the ass; they both walk, thus making asses of themselves.
