- This is one of the illustrations to Edward Grimeston's 'A Generall Historie of the Netherlands', first published in 1608 and later in 1627 (it is not clear from which edition the prints in the British Museum are extracted).
Grimeston's publication re-used the prints that Christoffel van Sichem (Hollstein 73-128) had engraved earlier for Jean-François Le Petit's 'La grande chronique ancienne et moderne, de Hollande, Zélande, WestFrise, Utrecht, Frise, Overyssel et Groeningen', 2 vols, Dordrecht, 1601 (a copy of which is kept at 208*.b.10-11).
Most prints in this series depict the Counts of Holland and are copied after Philips de Galle's series on the same subject. For comment on this series in the British Museum see 1871,1209.1671. The portraits of the counts Willem II (this one see Hollstein Goltzius 261), Willem V (1869,0612.225) and Charles the Bold (1873,1213.215) are not after Galle's plates but after Goltzius' print series of the Counts of Holland, although they look much alike. Christoffel van Sichem added a few stadholders to the series as well, which are individually after other prints by Goltzius for example see 1869,0612.226.
On the subject of series of the Counts of Holland see W. van Anrooij (ed.), 'De Haarlemse Graven Portretten', Hilversum, 1997.
