Tome Premier" (Paris, Desaint & Saillant; Durand) 1755; containing 70 prints by Charles-Nicolas Cochin fils and others after Jean Baptiste Oudry, illustrating the first, second and third books of La Fontaine's select fables. Bound to face letterpress text embellished with ornate woodcut culs-de-lampe by Papillon and others. Curator's comments
One of four volumes of the so-called "Oudry" edition initiated by Louis Regnard de Montenault (Paris, 1755-1759), kept at 161.c.9 to 12 (1869,0508.3 to 277). Letterpress explanation of the frontispiece and select vignettes and culs-de-lampe, together with the Approbation and Privilege du Roi, are bound at the end of Volume IV. Loose impressions of select plates are kept elsewhere in the collection.
