"Fables Choisies, mises en vers par J. de la Fontaine. Tome Troisième" (Paris, Desaint & Saillant; Durand) 1756; containing 68 prints after Jean Baptiste Oudry, illustrating the seventh, eighth, and ninth books of La Fontaine's select fables. Bound to face letterpress text embellished with ornate woodcut culs-de-lampe by Papillon and others. Curator's comments
One of four volumes of the so-called "Oudry" edition initiated by Louis Regnard de Montenault (Paris, 1755-1759), kept at 161.c.9 to 12 (1869,0508.3 to 277). The frontispiece to Volume One is inscribed with production information as follows: "Inventé par J. B. Oudry. terminé au burin par N. Dupuis. gravé à l'eau forte par C. N. Cochin le fils qui, d'après les originaux, à fait tous les traits, conduit et dirigé tout l'ouvrage." Loose impressions of select plates are kept elsewhere in the collection.
