- Curator's comments
- See Harrisse's 'L.-L. Boilly, peintre, dessinateur et lithographe' (Paris: Société de Propagation des Livres d'Art, 1898) for further information on the series 'Les Grimaces'. The plates here are the ones published by Delpech between 1823 and 1828, with the plate numbers. There are 96 plates (95 according to IFF) in 'Les Grimaces' original series, only part of which are here. The plates in this volume include plates dated 1824-1825 and undated plates; none of the plates dated from 1827-1828 have been included.
The second sequence of prints, 'La mauvaise nouvelle' is part of a two part sequence, with the second plate called 'La bonne nouvelle'.
