See BMSat 10815. A long narrow Assembly Room. Three couples, stiff and grotesque, face each other in the foreground; behind, three other couples dance holding both hands. The musicians (r.) are a black man playing tambourine and fife, and an old fiddler. A fat man stands by the door (r.) holding his wig and scratching his head. Next him, a very fat woman sits drinking from a punch-bowl which a man helps her to support. Above their heads is a placard headed: 'Ball - Suppe[r] ...'. Hats and scarves hang from a row of pegs. Below the design: 'Being overpersuaded to stand up in a country dance, when you know or what is equally bad, conceive that a bear would eclipse you in grace & agility.' 1 April 1807; volume published 1808
