- This is the first plate of a series of forty-two engravings (plus the frontispiece) illustrating William Cavendish's book on horse dressage, published in Antwerp in 1657; resulting from his exile between 1648 and 1660 during which he opened a riding school. The engravings are made after designs by Abraham van Diepenbeeck, by seven different printmakers (Cornelis van Caukercken, Peter Clouet, Pieter de Jode II, Theodoor van Kessel, Peeter van Lisebetten, Adriaen Lommelin and Lucas Vorsterman the Younger). Vorsterman made fourteen plates (see Hollstein nos.101-114). The British Museum holds an incomplete set of eighteen plates (nos.1, 2, 3, 5, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 30, 31, 33, 34, 40 and 41); they are all placed under Abraham van Diepenbeeck to keep the set together (except plate 5 which is placed under Crace Collection).
For an earlier state of this plate see also 1927,1008.431.
