- Curator's comments
- One of seventeen vignettes designed by Turner, for the seventeen volumes of 'The Works of Lord Byron: with his letters and journals, and his life, by Thomas Moore (London: Murray, 1832-3). They were republished in: 'Finden's landscape illustrations to Mr. Murray's first complete and uniform edition of the Life and Works of Lord Byron' (London: Murray and Tilt, 1832-4). Rawlinson refers the latter publication.
Some of the drawings, views in Greece and beyond in particular where Turner never travelled, were after other draughtsmen. The present plate is also after Page, though Turner visited Pisa in 1828 and made a sketch of the same view. (Wilton)
