Scene from Beaumont and Fletcher's tragicomedy 'Philaster': the eponymous hero in a grove, standing over his beloved Arethusa with drawn sword, enraged by false reports of her infidelity, turning to left to look at a peasant who rushes to the lady's defence, while another attacks him from behind; illustration for John Ballantyne's unpublished series of British Dramatists, after Stothard; proof with artists' names only.
