- Description
-
Satire on the financial crisis in 1720 with Prince Frederick Henry standing beside a tree extending his cloak as protection for three half-naked victims of share bubbles. Behind him is a bakery inside which a man can be seen kneading dough, lettering below indicating that he is cooking, or falsifying, shares; to the right of the tree, a boy rests on a rail defecating on the head of a man buried up to his neck in the earth surrounded by shares used as lavatory paper. Beyond is a pool in which Bombario, with a magic lantern on his back, and another man flounder; on the far bank stock dealers use share papers as bait to catch fish. Behind the pook stands a church among trees, at the door of which John Law having dismounted from a horse offers a bag of money to two monks who reject his cursed gift. Beyond the church, is a fairground wheel, the 'Malle molen' (fool's mill), on which four investors ride; above the wheel, the clouds part to reveal the sun in the sign of Pisces. At lower right, is a Jewish usurer on a donkey with a large sack of coins in front of him; he holds a finger to his lips as he hands a purse to a boy selling spectacles from a pedlar's box; beside him a miser, wearing a fur coat and hat holds a paper referring to his losses as his woman servant mocks him. Engraved Dutch inscriptions, title, and verses in three columns. 1720
