Title
Object:
A memento of the great public question of reform.
Description
Allegorical composition; the lower half of the design showing the enraged British lion, in the clouds, shooting lightning bolts of 'Reform' from its paws towards the fleeing Tories Cumberland, Wellington, Eldon, Wetherell and Croker, who retreat to left; at right, Fame, winged and with trumpet, reaches down to crown William IV with laurels; he is flanked by figures of 'Reform' and Britannia, who spears the snake-dragon 'Rotten boroughs'; above in the clouds are the benevolent half-length portraits of William IV, the Duke of Sussex, Lord John Russell, Grey, Althorp (John Charles Spencer), Brougham, Lansdowne, Holland, Sir Francis Burdett, O'Connell, Hume and Stanley, gathered in front of a laurelled flag inscribed 'Reform'. 15 April 1832 Etching and aquatint
