Series: Household servants in six plates - by William Heath
- Description
-
Lyndhurst stands by a fierce kitchen fire (right) holding a ladle made out of the Mace, and holding up a pair of double eye-glasses, looking fixedly at the spectator. He wears a white cap with long lappets resembling the Chancellor's wig, black gown, white-apron, and the Purse of the Great Seal suspended from his waist as a pocket. On a spit a huge sirloin is roasting, inscribed 'Slice of Johnny' [Bull], from which fat pours into the 'Chancery Dripping Pan'. A big kettle among the flames emits a cloud of steam inscribed 'Let us out.' He says: 'I do rule the roast—and certainly can get a sop in the pan when ever I please—but my Spouse is a sad plague to me.' Oct 10 1829
