A tall, well-dressed man, who is probably Sir Abraham King, leans aggressively towards Wellesley, hands on hips, to say: Joy be with you, I hear you are going away! A paper, Orange Lodge, projects from his pocket. Wellesley, much shorter, standing on tiptoe, hands on hips, retorts furiously: you lie! He wears knee-breeches, old-fashioned shoes, a ribbon and star. Behind him stands a large bottle with exploding contents inscribed (in pencil) Bottle Conjuror. The bottle is inscribed Magnified Bottle; within it sits the Devil (or Bottle Imp), flourishing a rattle and, holding papers. Behind the bottle (right) Plunket leans forward, left hand on hip, holding out a paper inscribed (in pencil) 4 Offices. He says to Wellesley: Never mind it, we'll dislodge them. In the middle distance (left), little Sir Harcourt Lees, wearing a top-hat, stands with legs astride, holding up a placard on a pole headed Antidote, and continuing Dublin [?] just Publish . . .J. H Lees. In his left hand he holds out a paper: no Dap . . Protest. . B . . . [scarcely legible]. He says: I'll stand my ground nor turn my coat | And prove a Stubborn Antidote. c. April 1823

See No. 14507, &c. Sir Harcourt Lees (1776-1852) was an Irish pamphleteer of strongly Protestant views. His Antidote . . . was a pamphlet printed in Dublin in 1819, reprinted 1820, but was also in 1823 the title of a newspaper to which he was the chief contributor. He was a man of 'innocent credulity' bordering on madness, and of 'fanatical passions', according to The Irishman of 14 Mar., quoted Cobbett, Pol. Reg., 5 Apr. For his 'placard politics' cf. No. 14508. For his share in the riots see a pamphlet by himself on his supposed Trial, 11 Jan. 1823, on charges of Barratry and Eavesdropping, Before Chief Justice B— [Bushe]. See No. 14515.A, a copy.
