A roadside scene between two signposts, one (left) pointing (left) To Cheltenham, the other (right) pointing (right) To Gloucester. A handsome well-dressed woman kneels at the feet of Col. Berkeley, a tall handsome man in regimentals, wearing a plumed cocked hat. He holds a flag inscribed Letters to Amuse the Public expose the Writer and save my Pocket; on this hangs a letter-file on which papers are spiked, the uppermost: Dearest Dear Dear Berkeley what language is strong enough to express how much I love those dear eyes, beautifull nose sweet mouth elegant person, captivating— but what part of you is there I do not covet oh! give me a Heart in exchange for that of your—. She exclaims: In Pity don't expose me! He strains away from her, walking towards Gloucester, saying, They will save me Thousands! In the middle distance (left) a stage-coach is passing, the door inscribed Waterhouse and Co, with inside and outside passengers. The driver says: I wish I had him in hand! how I would tickle his flanks; the woman seated next him: I think this wil not recommend him to the ladies in future. Two women in the dickey say: Where's the Honor of a Soldier and Faith there is none in this.

The lady is Mrs. Waterhouse, wife of a coach proprietor in Lad Lane (note by E. Hawkins). Col. Berkeley (1786-1857) of Berkeley Castle was the eldest son of the Earl of Berkeley, born before his father's marriage. He appears in many prints; for his scandalous career see Greville, Memoirs, 1938, iii. 264 f. For Mrs. Waterhouse see also Nos. 14859, 14860, 14869.
