- Object: Brave Nelson's last lash or a memento for the Dons.
- Description
-
Nelson stands composedly on the deck of the 'Victory', pointing behind him to a Spanish four-decker, the 'Santisima-Trinidada' (r.) while he turns his head in profile to the left. He wears his diamond aigrette or chelengk (see BMSat 9269) in his hat, two miniatures suspended from his neck, and a cluster of stars on his coat. On each side of him stands an officer. He says: "Now my brave Fellows I think we may make sure of twenty of them, and here is an Old Accquaintance of Ours that I wish to pay my respects to in particular, you'll Lash us together as fast as possible, and then give her as hearty and warm a Salute, as you have ever been famed for." Two sailors (l. and r.) prepare to throw grappling-irons; one says: "Why D-me Jack if this isnt the ship we had a brush with once before! its recon'd the largest in the World I hope we shall get her home that Poll may see her!" The ship flies a large Spanish flag; her poop is decorated with two angels adoring an irradiated eye set in a triangle. Her guns fire at the 'Victory'. Spanish dons stand by the flag, gazing through telescopes. British sailors are in violent action. December 1805

See BMSat 10442, &c. No attempt was made to board the 'Santissima Trinidad' from the 'Victory'. Nelson ordered the 'Victory' to be steered towards her bow, but not with the intention of attacking: he wished to reach the French flagship ('Bucentaure'). The Spanish flag-ship later received the distant and partial fire of the 'Victory', followed by that of three other ships, and was eventually boarded and taken in tow by the 'Prince'. A companion pl. to BMSat 10444.
