- Description
-
George III, wearing a crown, but unrecognizable, sits in profile to the right at a small round table on which is a raised pie (intact) inscribed 'Pâté Damiens' [sic], the only title. He looks at it doubtfully, while a stout cook (right) stands with extended arms, inviting him to begin. The King says: "Mais ... qui touche mouille." The other says: "Eh! Sire, n'êtes vous pas Anglois." The words are engraved below the design. There is no background, but grass indicates an alfresco setting. c. April 1803

- (Description and comment from M.Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', VIII, 1947)
The King fears the consequences of infringing the Peace of Amiens, see BMSat 9852, &c.; the cook may represent one of his ministers. 'Damiens' is doubtless an allusion to Damiens, who attempted to assassinate Louis XV. A copy is inset in BMSat 9996 A. See BMSat 10027, a sequel; cf. BMSat 10087.
