- Description
-
A sequel to BMSat 9984, probably by the same artist. George III (r.) leans back in his arm-chair, clasping his stomach; his crown falls from his head. He has been greedily devouring the 'Pâté d'Amiens', in which his fork is stuck. On the table beside it is a lidless teapot, emitting clouds of steam and inscribed 'ce qu'on a pris il faut le rendre'. A tall thin Minister wearing a blue ribbon, unrecognizable, but probably Pitt, stands (l.), his arms raised in dismay at the King's condition; he says: "Fatalle Imprudence!" The King says: "Maudit Pâté quelle Collique tu me donnes." The words are engraved below the design. June 1803

- (Description and comment from M.Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', VIII, 1947)
The breaking of the Treaty of Amiens (see BMSat 9852, &c.) has already had serious consequences for George III: the loss of Hanover, see BMSat 10023, &c, is probably indicated. Cf. Hennin, No. 12851: British Ministers, proud of having broken the treaty, are served with a 'pâté d'Amiens' containing a living cock. Cf. BMSat 10087.
