- Stephens quotes "Lloyd's Evening Post", 9-12 December 1763, p.4, col. 3, where Matthew Darly is said to have warned Wilkes of Dunn's attempt, which was provoked by Wilkes's attacks in the "North Briton" on the Scots and particularly on Lord Bute.
"The Gazetteer and London Daily Advertise"r carried the following notice on 16 December 1763: 'This day at Noon will be published. Price 6d. The Scotch Damien, a True Portrait of a Modern Asassin [sic] drawn from the Life at the Parliament Coffee-House, by a Gentleman in Company: To be had of Mary Darly, at the Acorn, in Ryder's-Court, Leicester Fields.'
The title refers to Robert François Damien who attempted to assasinate Louis XV in 1757.
