Female Court Martial
Description
Satire on Admiral Byng's court martial in the form of a burlesque trial for adultery of a fashionably-dressed lady; the "Prisoner" stands at the end of a table around which other ladies sit in judgement, their comments parodying those made in defence of Byng; at the far end of the table the "Judge Advocate" presides over the court from a high chair beneath a coat of arms with three hearts supported by cupids; to the left, other ladies, one of whom holds a book lettered "Cases of Adultery & Fornication". 1757 Etching

Curator's comments
Stephens suggests the attribution to Boitard and the style and figure types are clearly his. Stephens identifies several of those represented (see Inscription) in his account of BMSat 3568.
