The Noble Game of Bob Cherry
Description
A copy of The Noble Game of Bob Cherry (BM Satires 2851) with notable changes. The scene is again the Crown public house by St. James’s Palace, however now Sir John Hynde Cotton stands on the left watching the scene, while William Pitt stands smiling behind the vomiting Lord Granville and Robert Walpole stands behind Lord Bath laughing at the scene. Winchelsea, Willes and Chesterfield are in the same positions, though Willes still aiming for “High Chancellor” now holds a ribbon lettered “Regiment” and his sword is lettered, “Disbanded”; there is no longer a group of politicians on the right though Pelham and Newcastle are still there and behind them an unidentified man from whose coat hangs a key. Curator's comments
Walpole died on 18th March 1745, so he may be represented posthumously. His image is copied from The Funeral of Faction, 1741 (BM Satires 2487) after Gravelot.
