Portrait head of Brougham in profile to the left, framed in his Chancellor's wig. The upper part of forehead and wig are raised as if on a hinge to show the contents of the head: four books, two being 'Edinburgh Review' and 'Library of useful Knowledge', rolls of paper, and an ink-pot. 8 June 1832

Brougham founded the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in 1827, for publishing educational works, &c, in two series: 'Library of Useful Knowledge', and 'Library of Entertaining Knowledge', followed in 1832 by the 'Penny Magazine', see No. 17267, &c. He was a prolific and dictatorial contributor to the 'Edinburgh Review', overriding the editor. See Aspinall, 'Brougham and the Whig Party', 1927, Appendix A.
