- Text from 'An Illustrative Key to the Political Sketches of H.B.', London 1844:
The subject of this sketch is the rout and political slaughter of the Radicals at the General Election of August, 1841. Mr. O'Connell, as a leader of the party, is complimented with the character of Niobe. Kneeling at his feet is Lord Morpeth, then Secretary for Ireland, who lost his seat for the West Riding of Yorkshire. On the left of the picture is Mr. Vigors, prostrate on the ground, and transfixed with an arrow inscribed "Carlow," from which place he had been ejected. Over him kneels Mr. Hutton, late M.P. for Dublin, also a beaten candidate, and still further behind is the late member for Wicklow, Mr. Grattan, another of the rejected. The shadowy figure, finishing the picture on this side, represents Sir Edward Lytton Bulwer, formerly member for Lincoln, but member now no more. On the other side, nearest to Niobe, is Mr. Joseph Hume, who having retired from Kilkenny attempted to get a seat for the Borough of Leeds, but failed in the attempt, and stretched upon the ground in mortal agony lies Sir De Lacy Evans, who was beaten out of Westminster by Captain Rous. The last figure on the right hand is that of Mr. Wyre, late Member for Waterford.
