- Curator's comments
- The preface explains the purpose of this volume:
"In a beautiful work of the 'Prize Cartoons,' lately published by Messrs Longman and Co., an opportunity is afforded of perpetuating one of the most pleasing of these reminiscences, and of introducing, as it were, a little cartoon exhibition of itself into every drawing-room. / Our business, however, is not with the Prize Cartoons, nor their spirited publishers; not with the successful candidates, nor even their less fortunate brethren, who, although defeated, were nevertheless admitted to the contest. No! our sympathies are with those, in some cases not over-well-used men, who, from some unexplained cause, were excluded from the competition altogether."
