This sketch is most likely to have been produced by Paul Sandby whilst employed as Chief Drawing Master at the Woolwich Academy from 1768 until 1796. Sandby frequently sketched locally in Kent throughout this period of his career and provided daily classes on 'Landscape and Perspective', encouraging his cadet pupils to make use of the local landscape. For further information regarding this period of Paul Sandby's career see J. Bonehill & S. Daniels, 'Paul Sandby: Picturing Britain', (London, 2009),pp.17-18. For other drawings of Eltham, Kent by Paul Sandby, see 1867,1214.104, 1867,1214.102 and 1867,1214.101.
This drawing underwent conservation treatment in October 1981.
