- Curator's comments
- One of a series of 13 etchings made by Caterino Doino after drawings by Pirro Ligorio. The prints are mistakenly given to Giuseppe Caletti by Bartsch, who also mentions a fourteenth composition with unidentified figures. They were made to illustrate Antonio Cariola's 'Ritratti De' Ser.mi Principe d'Este Sig.ri di Ferrara' (1641) and record the paired portraits of marquises and dukes of Ferrara formerly frescoed in the courtyard of the Castello at Ferrara, providing a pictorial genealogy for the Este family (for further information on the frescoes and related drawings, see 1947,0305.4).
The BM possesses 12 loose impressions from this series, which are stored with the portrait prints (see 1866,1208.800 to 812). There is a duplicate impression of B.XX.136.16, while B.XX.136.18 is lacking. A loose engraved title page to the series is kept in the Title Pages folder in the Subjects series (1866,1208.799). A bound edition of the "Ritratti", complete with letterpress and titlepage is kept at 210*.c.12 (1949,0526.1.1 to 13).
