To the left is the study of an upper left leg seen from the back. The outer left contour is variously redrawn in the underdrawing, revealing a tentativeness that perhaps caused the pentimento in the penned contour of the knee. The adjacent drawing shows the same leg from the front with the bones of the knee joint revealed. It is less worked up, in contrast to the other thirteen sheets of this group.
The two limbs are close to two on the verso of the sheet by Michelangelo (C. de Tolnay, `Corpus dei disegni di Michelangelo`, 4 vols, Novara, 1975-80, no. 107) to which the previous sheet is related (1866,1208.651/52): in the Michelangelo sheet, the two limbs are placed close together and the oviform shape at the top of the left-hand leg is shown to be the sliced top of the limb, showing the origin of the drawing in a model or cast. The studies on the present sheet have been considerably increased in scale compared to Michelangelo`s exemplars. Increased still further in scale are two studies deriving from the same or similar studies by Michelangelo on the verso of a sheet after Raphael, Pouncey and Gere 62 / 1946,0713.502.
Although the verso contrasts with the recto by showing a single study, it is of related theme, showing a right thigh and pelvis from behind. The underdrawing is discernable beside the topmost contours.
