- This is the first plate from the so-called Luti collection. A series of 41 plates were registered under this title as 1866,1114.694 to 734. Although all on uniform paper, they are of very different character, and the history of the series is far from clear. Heinecken ('Idée d'une collection' p.109) records the title as published in a folio by Thomas Bradford in 1765: 'A collection, consisting of thirty etchings, after original drawings of Julio Romano, Michelangelo, Pietro Cortone, Titiano, Pietro Testa, Guercino, Rembrandt, Paolo Panini, Elsheimer, Benedetto Lutti. Collected by the late Cav. Lutti of Rome, and the plates executed by Bartolozzi, Zocchi of Florence'. The BM set consists of 41 plates (two are the same), and in addition to Bartolozzi and Zocchi, some of the plates are by Zuccarelli.
See also de Vesme + Calabi p.518 for a list of Bartolozzi prints that they state belong to the series.
