- Following Hymans, Bastelaer posits a first state of this print dated 1557, though he never saw an impression of this state himself. In turn, Lebeer and Hollstein have continued to suggest this earlier edition without knowing an exemplar of it. David Freedberg suggests that a date earlier than 1562 is not unlikely, given the early spelling of Bruegel's name with an 'h'. See Hymans, 'Biographie Nationale de Belgique,' t. XVI, col. 498, n. 43; David Freedberg, 'The Prints of Pieter Bruegel the Elder,' Tokyo, 1989, n. 53.
