- Curator's comments
- Bound as part of "Political Tracts Volume 3" a compilation of political pamphlets published circa 1819-1822, number 3 of 10 volumes. Volume 3 contains numerous pamphlets on the Queen Caroline affair. Also see "Political Tracts Volume 2", 184.a.2. for material concerning Queen Caroline.
As the pamphlet is not illustrated, it is not included in M. Dorothy George's "Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum."
The pamphlet's subject is likely to be Frances Villiers Countess of Guernsey who had died on 25th July 1821. "Shortly afterwards her papers including a 'great abundance' of letters from George IV were burned by her executor Lord Clarendon." (See DNB , Martin J. Levy, https://doi.org/10.1093/ref:odnb/63969.)
The recipient of the confessions (Lady Anne H*******) may be Lady Anne Hamilton, Queen Caroline's Lady in Waiting.
The preface to the final part of the pamphlet, "The Q--'s last letter to the K---," states has been forwarded to the editor by a sender with the initials AH after reading the "Confessions of the Late Countess of Guernsey." Therefore, the pamphlet can be dated after Queen Caroline's death on 7th August 1821.
