Reid 4949. Volume 1 of Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist" illustrated by George Cruikshank. One of three volumes bound in a marbled cover with a leather spine: "Oliver Twist. Boz. 1" lettered on the spine in gold.
On the title page: "Oliver Twist or, the Parish Boy's Progress by "Boz" in Three Volumes Vol 1. London: Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street. 1838."
On the verso: "London: Printed by Samuel Bentley, Dorset Street, Fleet Street."
With the following illustration plates (George Cruikshank lettered beneath each image and the title below.)

- One of three volumes. The illustrations to Oliver Twist were originally published in serialised form in "Bentley's Miscellany." See Reid 4947.
For further information on the editions of Oliver Twist, see Reid "A Descriptive Catalogue of Cruikshank's Works." 4949 which states that the first edition (1838) has: "twenty-four etchings, including the new plate instead of the cancelled one; published before it was finished in the Miscellany."
Second edition 1839. Another edition 1844 The plates much altered, but not by Cruikshank; a design for the wrapper was purposely made for this issue.
