Reid 4859. 'The shilling comic annual.' A Chap-book with wood engraved illustrations and a frontispiece illustration by George Cruikshank.
Lettered on the front cover: 'The shilling comic annual, a collection of all the short, good things which have, might, could, would, should or ought to have been said by the wise & witty of all ages and countries for the expansion of understanding. With a vignette illustration of a shoemaker. At the foot of the page: "London: Published by William Cruikshank. Price one shilling." The publisher's line on an inside page:
"WJ Sears, Printer, 4 Ivy Lane, Paternoster Row."
With a frontispiece illustration, Reid 3570. The head of a countryman, with a grinning face; the mouth is puled awry by little figures emblematical of Joke and Jest.
Lettered on the title-page:
"John Harcourt's original jests." With a quotation from J.H. Blofeld:
"Wit is like the sun beam's ray,
Sparkling, cheering ever gay;
Brightest offspring of the brain.
Sportive most of Fancy's train."
With the publisher's line at the foot of page. "London: Cowie and Strange, 60, Paternoster Row, and 24 Fetter Lane, 1827."
With a dedication to Charles Mathews Esq which reads "The talented representative of Jonathan W. Doubikins the following quibbles in return for many merry evenings, are inscribed by his obedient humble servant, the author."

Several publishers are associated with 'The shilling comic annual.' While the front cover/ wrapper gives the publisher's name as 'William Cruikshank.' The inside title-page state that Cowie and Strange published the text. Reid (4859) also cites John Fairburn as a publisher, although his name does not appear on this edition.
Cohn cites J H Blofeld as the author of the text.
